Testing for intelligence

Children learn and process information in different ways. Therefore, I believe that they should be assessed in different ways. In my school we use the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. We administer the Mississippi Curriculmn Achievement Test 2 (MCT2), which is desgined to determine whether state standards are being met and measure school achievement. However this is just one way of testing (pencil and paper). In the educational field, we always talk about how to promote learining has to be implemented using different learning styles.  If learning has to be implemented using different learning styles, why can't students be assessed using more than one test? Formative assessment is not considered a common concept in the German literature. They have more general descriptors which result in more data. There is also usage of several German journals that publish emperical studies in the educational field.
search was conducted by several means.

  1. I agree children do learn and process information differently. Some people are kinesthetic learners and some are auditory just to name a few. Testing should not be limited to a pencil and paper great post.

  2. Terrance children do learn differently we all are different in many ways. Some children will need to take a break in between working because some children just cannot keep still due to a disability disorder.

  3. Hi Terrance:

Excellent blog! I totally agree with what you said about children being assessed differently. I remember taking tests like that in school and passed them with no problem. But after reading Sharee's blog, I see that my emotional intelligence should have been assessed as well. Teachers spoke highly of me because I was smart, but I was an emotional child. And now I am an emotional adult. I believe if our emotional intelligence would have been assessed at an early age, then I would have been able to get a better grip as a child and handle things better in my adult life. Not making excuses, just stating an observation lol. Don't get me wrong, considering what I went through as a child, I turned out fairly well as an adult. But just looking at my thought process and how I have done things in life...it makes me think...Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to read your blog! God bless...

  4. Hello everyone,
I agree with everything that has been said thus far. There should be more that one way to test children. I whole heartedly feel as though children test should only be done in a stress free environment. I also feel that teachers should not make the children feel so stressed by talking about the test. When I was teaching, I made testing as comfortable as possible. I treated testing day like any ordinary day. Each day of a child's school day is just as important as a testing day.

  5. Terrance I just think in my opinion being assessed shouldn't determine children intelligence or if they are smart enough because some children just can't sit and take test. Some children I know are smart and still wouldn't do as well on the mct2 tests. Good post!!

  6. Aside from being able to sit still and concentrate many children just feel stress and "freeze up." I know this feeling well. I thrive at completing projects and working at my own pace. Tests for me were terrifying. While I did well in school it was a constant uphill battle. I pray that my own children do not have that same battle.
